Tsujiri Chinatown. I ordered the Shiratama Sundae. Again. 3.4.25.

Tsujiri Chinatown

33 Newport Court,

London WC2H 7PQ

Opening Hours: 11:00 – 22:00

Little shops that sell a handful of delicious things to consume are my preferred places to eat. The service is fluid, the quality is usually excellent and the prices tend to be more reasonable. Something that’s more possible when you’re not paying (much) for the ambience.  Newport Court is a little alleyway that leads from Charing X Road into the heart of London’s Chinatown. It's packed with little food shops on either side with a distinctly Asian flavour. In fact, there are at least three other establishments on the same side of the street that also offer ice ceam. I will check them out at some point soon, I promise, but I had a tough day yesterday and I was not in the mood for surprises.

Ordering the same thing over and over again arguably shows a lack of imagination. As far as desserts are concerned, I plead guilty. My willingness to eat almost anything as a main is matched by my desire for no unpleasant shocks when I’m ending a meal on a saccharine high or simply out for something to raise my morale.

Tsujiri ticks all the boxes that matter for me. The décor is clean sparse and functional. There’s no need for chat and the sundae is whipped up in short order. At £7.90 for the Shiratama Sundae, it’s affordable. You have a choice of soft serve ice cream, I always opt for the green matcha flavour. Curled in with the green matcha is a striping of red bean paste, which while sweet doesn’t overwhelm the flavour of the red bean. That’s the thing about the ice cream they sell here – it’s not too sweet. The ice cream has a distinct favoour that you can detect - and relish. It feels like the cheaper the ice cream, the sweeter it is. Anyone who’s sampled some of the Walls products will know what I mean. Not quite as good as the very best Neapolitan gelato but runs it very very close and wins bonus points for being different. I should mention in passing that seating is prosaic but available. Would I go back again? Yes.
